not going after their rights? the national review was told, quote, governor romney would, of course, support legislation aimed at providing greater protections for life. this is the second time this year the campaign corrected their candidate on abortion. back in august, romney said abortion should be legal in several situations, including when the health of the mother is in danger. >> now, i'm in favor of abortion being legal in the case of rape and incest and the health and life of the mother. >> but then his campaign walked it back, saying, quote, he doesn't support an exception to protect the health of a pregnant woman. in all this that we're seeing, is it making your head spin? well, it should. because all year mitt romney has been clearly, severely anti-choice. >> do i believe the supreme court should overturn roe v. wade? >> now romney is contradicting that because with weeks to go he badly needs the women vote. he's down 22 points in ohio, a must-win state for him. so romney decided he must run from his party's extreme view on abortion and there's so much to run from. gop legislature

preoccupied with the gop base, romney has decided to junk the right wing red meat and start talking to swing voters. it seems to be working. he's trailed in real clear politics poll but now he's pulled ahead. there is a problem with the story line, though. romney actually hasn't moved to the middle at all. at least not in any meaningful, substantive way. he didn't in last week's debate and he hasn't on the campaign trail since then. what he has done is kind of brilliant, though n a devious way. mitt romney understands the actual policy positions that the republican party now stands for. the positions romney had to swear up and down that he shares in order to win the republican nomination on basically poison in a general election, so he's just pretenned he doesn't have those views. take that debate clip that romney said people with preexisting conditions would have nothing to worry about urn his health care plan. that's a moderate thing to say and what swing voters would want to hear. they would be upset denying insurance to the sick but that's exactly what would happen under romney's plan, w

supporter how real is the possibility right now that mitt romney can win this election? >> steve, thanks for having me on. we ought to all take a deep breath. campaigns have twists and turns. last week was a challenging week for the president and the campaign but there's 27 days left to go. the president has the right, forward-looking agenda. coming to colorado, people here care about issues and clear contrasts of governor romney and president obama. we have a diverse state coming to the geography. eastern plains growing the foods and we have the mountains and canyons to the west of the front range. you say the same thing in every area of colorado to serve the state. i didn't hear that from governor romney. i'm not sure which governor romney showed up last week but shaken the etch-a-sketch and next couple of weeks americans have a clear contrast of president and governor romney and the positions that governor romney's taken over the last couple of years. you need somebody who's consistent as president. >> senator, i love colorado but i want to talk about the senate for a moment. >> yes.

, it's clear romney got a bump from it. it was on thursday and friday, the two days right after the debate. on saturday and sunday, and this is a breakdown in the gallup poll and other polls. you see it in the cnn poll of ohio, that bump sort of receded and the press's jobs numbers took over. any poll will show romney up and i'll be caution about how big the jump is. i think willie is right. it's clear the debates matter and reset the narrative. the other thing i would say is for obama if you look back at the debate, he didn't do any harm to the cause. his favorability rating went up. he didn't symptom romney's movement and put out an affirmative case for why he should be president. the legacy of this debate is obama demoralized a lot of people that supported him. he didn't show any passion. he didn't outline affirmatively what the next four years of his administration would look like. a lot of democrats were demoralized by it. chuck todd talked about numbers before the debate, an enthusiasm gap. this doesn't help the enthusiasm gap. >> the thing is it if it's at football game,
